Green Building Definition

Green building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource efficient throughout the life cycle of a building from site to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and decommissioning. This practice expands and complements classic building design concerns for economy, utility, durability, and comfort. A green building is also defined as a sustainable or high performance building.

 The ideal "green" project would conserve and restore habitat, which is vital to sustain life and become a net producer and exporter of resources, materials, energy and water rather than a net consumer. A green building is a building whose lifelong construction and operation ensures the healthiest environment while representing the most efficient and least disruptive use of land, water, energy and resources. An optimal design solution is one that effectively simulates both natural systems and site conditions before they are developed - after development is complete.
